05/03/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nick Stavinoha belted a tie-breaking pinch-hit home run in the seventh, and reigning NL Player of the Week David Freese added a three-run double, as the St. Louis Cardinals spoiled Joe Blanton's return to the mound in a 6-3 win over the Phillies.
Freese went 2-for-5 and scored a run for the Cardinals, who have won eight of nine thanks to some strong pitching. Jaime Garcia (3-1) threw St. Louis' 12th straight quality start by allowing one run, three hits and four walks in six frames. The stretch is the longest in team history since 1973, when its pitchers threw 14 such games in a row.
Colby Rasmus added three hits and two RBI in the win, while Matt Holliday hit two doubles and scored twice in this opener of a four-game series.
Jayson Werth and Chase Utley each hit a solo homer for the Phillies, whose offense was shut down after scoring 21 runs in the last two games -- both wins. Blanton (0-1), who sat out the first month with an oblique strain, gave up four runs on 10 hits and a walk while fanning four over 6 2/3 innings.
With the game tied, 1-1, entering the seventh inning, the Cardinals grabbed the lead on Stavinoha's pinch-hit leadoff shot to left.
After allowing two singles, the second with two outs, Blanton was pulled in favor of Nelson Figueroa, who intentionally walked Holliday before giving up a three-run double to Freese.
Rasmus followed with a bloop RBI single to make it a 6-1 St. Louis lead.
Werth's homer leading off the bottom of the seventh and Utley's shot to start the ninth accounted for the final margin.
Holliday led off the top of the second with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Rasmus' sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals looked to increase their lead in the fifth but caught an unlucky break. Brendan Ryan, batting ninth, tripled to the gap in right-center leading off. Third baseman Placido Polanco held the tag on him during the slide into the base, and Ryan was out after the umpire ruled his hand came off the base.
Blanton retired the next two batters to get out of the inning, and the Phillies followed by tying the game in the home half.
Werth led off with a double and moved to third on Raul Ibanez's bloop single to center. Juan Castro lofted a sacrifice fly to right, and Carlos Ruiz drew a walk. Blanton put down a bunt that catcher Yadier Molina grabbed and fired to third for the out. Freese gunned it to first, and the throw sailed past the base, allowing Ibanez to score. However, the umpire ruled that Blanton interfered with Skip Schumaker's ability to make the play at first and was out, ending the inning with the score tied, 1-1.
St. Louis put runners on first and third with two outs in the sixth, but Molina's swinging bunt was dug out by Ruiz, who threw to first for the out.
Game Notes
Garcia struck out six in the win...Blanton suffered his first career loss to St. Louis, having been 3-0 with a 1.71 earned run average coming in...The Phillies are 2-5 against left-handed starters this season after going 29-16 last year...Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was ejected for arguing the Blanton interference call in the fifth...Werth has reached base safely in 25 straight games to open the season, the longest streak in team history in the "live ball era" (1920)...Garcia has gone at least six innings in each of his five starts.

NFL betting action is back! At MySportsbook, all of the pro football odds are posted for the NFC North. Check out how we see the four teams in this cloudy division stacking up this year in the chase for the playoffs! Green Bay Packers (+125) - With QB Aaron Rodgers leading the offense and DC Dom Capers working his magic on defense, the Packers are a real force to be reckoned with.
Virtually nothing changed on this offense for Green Bay from last year to this year, save for the addition of rookie OT Brian Bulaga to the bunch. Expect more huge numbers from the Pack, and a relatively favorable schedule should get them over the hump and into the playoffs once again this season. My NFL Betting Predictions: 11-5, 1st place in NFC North Minnesota Vikings (+130) - There are still too many unknowns about the Vikes this year. There is a huge difference between QB Brett Favre and either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels under center. Plus, is Favre comes back, is he really going to be able to keep his pick total under double digits again? Depth at running back looked like it might have been an issue with RB Chester Taylor fleeing in free agency, but drafting RB Toby Gerhart should pick up the difference. This defense is still suitable, but with a first place schedule, making the playoffs is going to be very tough regardless of whether #4 comes back or not.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year. No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.
Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
The Patriots will make NFL betting fans a lot of money this season, get in early and enjoy the cash.
